Our vision is to deliver the best possible independent living accommodation whilst preserving and maintaining our beautiful heritage site.
Founded in 1249 by Walter Suffield, Bishop of Norwich, the Great Hospital, nestled in the Cathedral Quarter of the city, has had to adapt many times since the 13th century.
In the beginning the first beneficiaries were aged priests, poor scholars, and sick and hungry paupers. 775 years later the Great Hospital continues to support local people in need with affordable independent living accommodation while also maintaining a seven-acre estate full of historic and architectural interest.
The estate provides one bedroom and two bedroom apartments for over 100 residents in an eclectic mix of former almshouses, period buildings, and more modern buildings. The welfare of all residents is supported in a unique community.
There are also breathtaking spaces for event organisers, and guided tours are available for visitors to see the unique collection of individually outstanding heritage buildings which span the Norman, medieval, Georgian, Victorian and modern eras.
The charity’s vision is to create a sustainable future for the Great Hospital, delivering the best possible independent living accommodation with the parallel responsibility of preserving and maintaining our beautiful heritage site.
From February to April 2024 we are consulting with residents, families, staff and members of the community about how we can deliver the best possible independent living accommodation with the parallel responsibility of preserving and maintaining our beautiful heritage site.
We hope you will take part and work with us to achieve a sustainable future for the Great Hospital.
