Bespoke for every occasion: the Great Hospital’s best venues for hire

The unique collection of heritage buildings at the Great Hospital provides the perfect setting for a range of private events, such as wedding receptions, celebrations and corporate functions. Birkbeck Hall, the medieval Refectory and the Ivory Room are all available for private hire, with bespoke catering options to suit every occasion.

Below we’ve shared an insight into each of our event spaces, their capacity, versatility and their stunning historical features to make the perfect location for your next event.

Birkbeck Hall

A beautiful example of Victorian and Edwardian Gothic revival architecture, Birkbeck Hall was named after 1901’s Chairman of Trustees, Sir Henry Birkbeck.

A tapestry which dates back to 1249 adorns the walls and offers an insight into the history of the Great Hospital.

The Hall’s large inglenook fireplace adds even more character to the venue.

Birkbeck Hall’s magnificent 15th century oak serving table makes it a wonderful location for wedding receptions and other private dining events. There is capacity for 120 formal dining guests and 150 guests for a canapé reception, and the venue can also be transformed into theatre style to host up to 150 attendees.

Medieval Refectory

With tie beams, carved spandrels and kingposts supporting the roof, this venue has it all: it’s the perfect location for charity events, wedding receptions and conferences.

Set west of the cloisters, the hall can be used in conjunction with Birkbeck Hall to host a drink and  canape reception (with capacity for 100 guests) prior to a formal dinner.

Like Birkbeck Hall, the Refectory boasts a number of charming features, including an original 16th century solid oak refectory table and a grand open fireplace. The room is also overlooked by a minstrels’ gallery.

Ivory Room

Located inside the Georgian St. Helen’s House, the Ivory Room is an elegant venue fit for all manner of occasions.

St. Helen’s House itself is rich in history, having been designed and built by renowned local architect Sir Thomas Ivory in the 18th century. Ivory also designed and built the Octagon Chapel and the Assembly House.

On the way to the Ivory Room, you’ll encounter a curved panelled door which opens into an oval anteroom on the first floor, painted with grisaille panels in a Pompeian style. From here, you’ll find the Music Room and the Ivory Room, each boasting highly decorated domical ceilings.

A beautiful formal dining room, the Ivory Room is perfect for business meetings and light lunches. It hosts up to 20 people.

Wi-Fi is provided in each event space, while Birkbeck Hall and the Medieval Refectory also offer disabled access and toilet facilities. The Great Hospital has disabled parking available on site.
